I agree with you. I love travelling by train. My only caveat is that I, like many Americans, have a job that provides precious little vacation time. Travelling by train is a luxury that's not often an option if you indeed do have to get to a destination quickly in order to be there to visit friends/family.

[...] Utilities first. We first dug a 400 ft. trench and put in all our lines ourselves, leaving the connections to the experts. We carefully hung the water and telephone lines above the propane and electrical conduit. (Care had to be taken with this trench along the driveway as it went through part of our wetland). More important than a toilet (you can rent those), was having access to the internet, electricity (no noisy, gas powered generators) and a wired phone line since cel reception is spotty. Putting in the lines in first also allowed us to build a gravel driveway to accept heavy equipment in Summer. (See video of utility trench). [...]

So just as an apple a day may keep the doctor away, doing a home performance retrofit can keep the energy losses at bay. A Nice comparision. Very nice information with Providing Performance Checkups to the Nation’s Homes. thanks for the information.

OK, you sucked me in. Something like my economist joke, that you're building your own universe out of your own atom.

The car loan people are nicer than the banks for sure. I too had credit cards cancelled (my iTunes Barclaycard, even!) and sales pitches from new banks. I finally went to a credit union, who treated me right. But we're back at Bank of America now because the staff has a high degree of autonomy regarding cashing checks.

I had a car loan through Honda Financial and another through a higher-interest lender. Both cars got repossessed when I got behind on my payments (not at the same time, thankfully). But both lenders let me redeem my cars and get them out of the tow yard unscathed. So the car loan lenders are (or were?) a lot more lenient than the banks, probably because they would have a hard time selling it at auction. The recession works to this deadbeat's advantage, clearly.

Bob,

Unfortunately I think your experience with the large banks is all too common.

You are much more likely to get personal service from almost any credit union than from any large bank.

Some lf the smaller banks, for example, Viking Bank in Ballard, offer a more personal approach than the large national institutions.

Great post - it really is all about individual service. This really sums up the difference between banks and credit unions. I love credit unions! Thanks BECU!

Great article.
I believe too many of our bank leaders and regulators don,t seem (or want) to remember a time when banks weren,t casinos; too self interested to consider alternative ways of doing things; too focused on their little patch to see the bigger picture; too timid to embark onserious change
